IPC Answers Call for Bridge Inspection

During the evening rush hour of August 1, 2007, a bridge supporting one of the busiest freeways in Minnesota unexpectedly collapsed, taking the lives of 13 people and injuring 145 more.1 To many leaders at the time, the Interstate 35W bridge disaster served as a wake-up call to the country’s deteriorating infrastructure. More than $100 million was ultimately paid out by the state and two contractors to survivors and families of the dead. Infrastructure Preservation Corporation (IPC) has an answer to this catastrophic problem in the form of new geophysical nondestructive inspection technology, leveraged through robotic systems.

Looking back over the last 50 years, such loss of life is not all that uncommon.2 In 1980, 35 people died when a freighter rammed one of the support columns of Tampa Bay’s Sunshine Skyway Bridge. In 1967, 32 vehicles plunged into the freezing Ohio River when the Silver Bridge between Point Pleasant, WV and Gallipolis, OH collapsed, taking the lives of 46 people”a 0.1-inch defect in a metal bar was indicated to be at fault.

Out of approximately 612,000 bridges in existence in the U.S., more than 55,000 of them are in need of repair3″and Americans cross these endangered structures 185 million times per day.

New solutions, such as that developed by IPC, points the way to saving countless lives”as well as billions in repairs”by isolating structural faults before they become serious issues.4 Robotic systems leverage geophysical nondestructive technology (NDT) protocols to, in effect, x-ray concrete and other infrastructure to identify early-stage deterioration, enabling recommendation of repairs before deterioration spreads and compromises the structure’s ability to carry its design loads. Proper diagnosis allows planning and repair of early-stage deterioration, which is also financially preferable, in that it prolongs infrastructure service life expectancy.

“Traditional infrastructure inspection methods are over 50 years old and are thus quite outdated,” said Doug Thaler, president of IPC. “They are manual in nature and often deliver subjective results. There are new solutions that provide quantitative data, allowing departments of transportation (DOTs) to better allocate existing maintenance budgets.”

IPC’s solutions, now patented or in patent pending status, constitute the first commercially viable robotic inspection methods in the industry. As life coaching is gaining popularity, so is interest in becoming a life coach. Many people love the idea of working for themselves and being in a profession that helps others. If you are thinking about becoming a life coach, there are several factors you need to consider.

First, decide what type of life coach you want to become. The word “life” covers a lot of territory so life coaches tend to specialize in specific areas. These areas include career and finance, goal setting, relationships, weight loss/fitness and drugs and alcohol, just to name a few.

What is your passion and how do you want to inspire others to create success in their lives?

When thinking about what type of life coach you want to be, examine your career, education and life experience to find your current strengths.

Once you have an idea of what area you want to focus on, consider what a life coach does. This is tricky because there is no one definition or universal standard so several interpretations exist. You need to develop a format in which you will teach successful actions to your clients.

Life coaching is a proactive approach to resolving obstacles in an individual’s life and it requires a clear picture of not only why and how, but also of step-by-step implementation and the ability to resolve blocks and setbacks as they come up. You’ll need to combine these factors into a working platform to assist your clients in reaching their goals.

Finally, when you are ready to start life coaching, how are you going to get clients? The idea of working for yourself and helping people may sound great, and it is but it comes with its difficulties. You are not going to simply get business cards made then start filling your appointment book. Schools offering great careers as life-coaches will only be able to give you limited assistance in getting clients. After you spend your time and money either with a life coaching school or developing your own style of life coaching it will be up to you to get clients. You are one hundred percent responsible for your income and success.

You should enjoy networking and self-promoting. You can build a clientele through friends, networking groups, placing ads, professional relationships, and whatever other creative ways you can think of. As you get clients and earn a reputation, your business will grow through referrals. All this takes time, so be prepared.

As you are developing your business, you will have to overcome the obstacle of people questioning what a life coach does. Be prepared by asking yourself why someone would pay you to advise him or her and have a good answer. The answer you develop to that question will be the foundation for your success.

Apart from the dangers that we have already discussed in diet pills, there are also hundreds of different other ingredients found in them that have not been scientifically evaluated in order to determine whether or not they pose any other health risks.

There is one thing that has been proven and that is that all prescribed pills have side effects, but the difference is that these pills have been proven scientifically to work and they have well known side effects which the doctors can readily manage.

Last of all, if you are considering purchasing any type of diet pills, make sure that you read the package to assure what ingredients they have in them and be aware that they are in no way safer to take than a prescribed pill.

Why Short Sellers Want to Crash the Tupperware Party

Here’s from the piece:

“When the Federal Trade Commission proposed new rules this spring for multilevel marketers businesses best known for commercials that promise riches selling herbal supplements and beauty supplies it drew howls of protest. Tupperware party-givers, diet pill vendors and knife salesmen sent the agency more than 15,000 letters complaining that the proposed rules would undo a $30-billion-a-year industry.”

The article reports that short stock sellers are now an ally with the FTC – the short sellers are “betting that the stocks of multilevel marketing companies will decline when the new rules, which have received little public attention, go into effect.” (They have not yet – KK.)

The new rules “would require companies to tell potential recruits how many sales representatives have failed to earn more than their start-up costs…”

“If companies have to tell recruits that the average income is only $1,400 instead of the $50,000 advertised on their Web site, or that the average salesman only lasts two months, a lot fewer people are going to sign up, said Mimi Sokolowski, an analyst with Sidoti & Company who follows Tupperware Brands, Nu Skin Enterprises and other publicly traded multilevel marketing companies.”

She ads – “if the proposed rules pass without modification, recruitment in the United States could fall by as much as 40 percent.” (Chances are good the rules will be modified a bit – KK.)

The story uses Pre-Paid Legal as an example of short seller enthusiasm (although they mention Avon, Tupperware, NuSkin, Herbalife, Mannatech, USANA Health Sciences and Medifast.)

“Under the rules, Pre-Paid Legal would have to tell prospects that fewer than a quarter of its sales representatives sold more than one insurance plan in 2005, something it disclosed to investors in a filing with the S.E.C. While Pre-Paids Web site tells prospects that if they market just five memberships per week, youll receive $500 per week! very few representatives have consistently sold five memberships a week.”

Promises are killing our business. Because they aren’t true. It is NOT easy to make money doing this or any other business of one’s own. Plus we don’t know for sure how a product will affect someone else, do we?

We don’t need the promises. Stories of what happened for you or others? Yes. Dreams? Yes. Promises? No.

Turns out, there are tons of websites that host products and let you sell them using their shopping cart. These options make it incredibly easy to start making sales on the internet and we ll use this chapter to review a few of them.

Perhaps the best known online platform for making sales online is eBay. Most people know eBay as an auction site where you can make your products available for open bidding, but that s only the beginning.

eBay allows its users to create their very own eBay store, featuring all of their products in one place. You can then put certain popular products into the public auction and use them to entice shoppers into your store. Also, eBay owns the widely-used PayPal platform, making it easy to send and receive money securely.

Its worthwhile noting that eBay is one of the highest traffic websites on the internet. It s crawling with literally millions of shoppers all the time. I call that a raging river and it s a great place to put your product in front of a massive buying audience quickly.

There are tons of resources devoted to leveraging the eBay opportunity and I recommend you simply put selling products on eBay into a Google search to get started.

eBay isn t the only place where you can create your own store. Yahoo offers a similar opportunity. The Yahoo Shopping network is a powerful and flexible platform that gives regular people an easy way to sell products on the internet.

Of course, one of the largest online retailers is Amazon. Well, as luck would have it, you can sell your products there too! Amazon has a number of seller programs including the Advantage program, making it easy to upload products and sell them to the public.

Within the Advantage program, Amazon fulfils the orders for you. That means they ship your product to the customer. They also have a second seller platform where you fulfill the orders yourself. With eBay and Yahoo, the product delivery is always left to you.

With eBay and Yahoo, you re the retailer. With Amazon Advantage, you re the wholesaler and Amazon is the retailer. Because of that, the Advantage program takes a much larger cut. They get the first 55% of your product s sales price. But then, whenever you see a reduced price on Amazon, that discount comes out of their share, not yours.

Keep in mind that these programs are changing all the time. New websites are popping up every day and that increased competition improves these arrangements for sellers over time. Check to see what the latest programs offer and use the ones that best suit your situation.

There are dozens of other places where you can sell your products, particularly if the product is digital (like an ebook or an audio file). Zipidee is a great example. On Zipidee, you can upload your digital products and sell them to the public.

The biggest advantage of these platforms is that they all have massive traffic already. That means you can put your product in front of their buyers, and not worry quite as much about generating your own traffic. Driving traffic is usually the hardest part!

Of course, you can also drive traffic to your own website or blog and then link through to these platforms. That means you can include a link on your sales page (with the killer sales copy you wrote in Chapter 25) that points to the website where your visitors can actually purchase the product.
