PETA protests Burberry in White Plains, NY

Category : Uncategorized

Wednesday, July 11, 2007

Today, at 12:00 p.m. EDT (UTC-4) the Animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) staged a “naked” protest in White Plains, New York. The target of the protest was British fashion house, Burberry, and their fur practices.

Two “naked” female PETA members, wearing nothing but bikini bottoms and body paint held billboards with the slogan, “When plaid goes bad.” The body paint was done in the trademarked Burberry Check plaid design.

Two other PETA members were there handing out leaflets and showing a video presentation. The painted protesters were spattered with far less fake blood than other documented PETA protests in this campaign.

PETA is protesting Burberry for the company’s use of fur in its products and how it is obtained. The group has staged similar protests around the world in its ongoing “BloodyBurberry”-campaign.

The protest took place at the intersection of Westchester Avenue and Bloomingdale Road in front of the The Westchester, an upscale shopping mall owned by Simon Property Group. Burberry has a retail store in the mall.

This corner is far from the mall’s entrances and sees little pedestrian traffic. However, it does see heavy traffic by motorists, before whom the protestors were in plain sight. While Wikinews was on the scene, police and news media were the only other pedestrians.

The police presence was significant, numbering at least two vehicles and two mounted police officers. But since there was no crowd to control, they just hung back. Media was also there in numbers. At least two television crews could be observed.

As far as Wikinews can tell, Burberry has yet to make any public comment about any of the “BloodyBurberry” protests.

Bank of America leads Consumer Financial Protection Bureau complaints about mortgages

Category : Uncategorized

Thursday, October 3, 2013

A review this week by Wikinews of US Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) complaints about mortgages in the United States shows Bank of America leads all lending institutions in complaints.

Since mortgages complaints were recorded in December 2011, 77,622 total have been added to CFPB’s database. 29.2% of these complaints involved Bank of America, with the second most received by Wells Fargo, accounting for 15.5% of all complaints. JPMorgan Chase ranked third by volume of complaints with 9.8%. Ocwen was fourth with 8.7% and Citibank was fifth with 4.8%. Nationstar Mortgage; Green Tree Servicing, LLC; HSBC; PNC Bank; U.S. Bancorp; OneWest Bank; SunTrust Bank; Flagstar Bank; and Select Portfolio Servicing, Inc. each had between 1.0 and 3.8% of total complaints. The remaining 14.4% of all complaints about consumer mortgages were divided between about 530 other lending institutions.

The Motley Fool reported last month that for the past fiscal quarter, the biggest US based mortgage lenders were from first to fifth Wells Fargo, JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Quicken Loans and U.S. Bancorp.

According to the US Federal Reserve, debt for family residences stands at US$10.706 trillion for the second quarter of 2013. As of the end of June of this year, Bank of America is the United States’s second largest commercial bank with US$1.343 trillion in domestic assets. Wells Fargo is the fourth largest commercial bank with US$1.251 trillion in domestic assets. JPMorgan Chase is the largest US commercial bank with US$1.329 trillion in domestic assets and US$1.947 trillion in total assets.

The mortgage complaints in the CFPB report include several subproducts. Conventional fixed mortgages account for 27.1% of all complaints. Conventional adjustable mortgages account for 10.0%. FHA mortgages account for 7.7% of all complaints. Home equity loans or lines of credit account for 3.8% of all complaints. VA mortgages are 1.4% of all complaints. Second mortgages and reverse mortgages each account for 0.6% of complaints. The remaining 48.7% of complaints are about other mortgages or other mortgage issues. A few years ago, FHA loans accounted for about 10% of all US mortgages while VA loans accounted for about 3%. Prime loans accounted for over 75% of the market and the rest were subprime mortgages.

California leads all states by volume of complaints with 14768. It is followed by Florida, New York, Georgia and Texas. When complaints are divided by a state’s total population, New Hampshire leads. The state is followed by Washington D.C., Maryland, Georgia and Florida. Complaints do not correlate with national rankings for August’s foreclosure rate by state where Nevada topped the list, followed by Florida, Ohio, Maryland and Delaware.

Two zip codes account for over 1,000 total complaints between them. 565 complaints originated in the 48382 zip code, which is in Commerce Township, Michigan, located in suburban Detroit. 553 complaints originated in the 33071 zip code, in Coral Springs, Florida. According to real estate website Zillow, there are currently 1,033 properties in foreclosure in Coral Springs while Commerce Township only has 131 properties currently in foreclosure. Four other zip codes have 100 plus complaints originating from them. 91730, in Rancho Cucamonga, California, had 158 complaints. 33409, in West Palm Beach, Florida, had 132. 92626, in Costa Mesa, California, had 125 complaints. 92660, in Newport Beach, California, had 122 complaints. Respectively, the towns had 534, 1,068, 153, and 134 properties currently in foreclosure. These numbers are higher than for the cities of a few sampled zip codes where there was only one complaint, such as Gold Hill, Oregon which has 4 properties in foreclosure, and Decatur, Illinois which has 6 properties in foreclosure.

The CFPB categorizes complaints into six categories: “Loan modification, collection, foreclosure” or problems when a person is unable to pay; “Loan servicing, payments, escrow account” or problems with making a payment; “Application, originator, mortgage broker”; “Credit decision / Underwriting”; “Settlement process and costs”, and “Other”. The CFPB says the complaint types indicate consumers “appear to be driven by a desire to seek agreement with their companies on foreclosure alternatives. The complaints indicate that consumer confusion persists around the process and requirements for obtaining loan modifications and refinancing, especially regarding document submission timeframes, payment trial periods, allocation of payments, treatment of income in eligibility calculations, and credit bureau reporting during the evaluation period.” Currently, 59.6% of all complaints against lenders deal with being unable to pay. 25.1% deal with problems in making a payment. 7.0% have to do with the application process.

Of the complaint-heavy zip codes, for 48382 in Commerce Township, Michigan, 98.9% of all complaints have to deal with being unable to pay. Accounting for 23.4% of all mortgage complaints in Commerce Township, 132 of the complaints for being unable to pay were made regarding Bank of America, accounting for 97.8% or all but 3 complaints against them from the zip. 121 of the Bank of America responses in Commerce Township were closed with explanation and 12 were closed with non-monetary relief. 33071 in Coral Springs is different, with 537 of the 553 complaints being categorized under other. Only 11 complaints relate to foreclosure and issues with being able to pay. 92626 in Costa Mesa, where 32% of the mortgage complaints were about Bank of America and 26.4% were about Wells Fargo, had 93.6% of its complaints dealing with being unable to pay. 5 total complaints dealt with payment issues and 3 dealt with applications.

Beyond regional variance in complaint types lodged, the top five mortgage lenders by volume of complaints all had being unable to pay as their top complaint category, ranging between 55.8% for Citibank and 69.4% for Bank of America. Problems with payment accounted for the second largest area of complaints, with Ocwen having the largest percentage of complaints at 31.9% and Bank of America having the smallest at 18.8%. Foreclosure was the top area of complaints for a number of other lending institutions including 1st Alliance Lending, OneWest Bank, Ally Bank, Banco Popular de Puerto Rico, Bank of the West, BMO Harris, BOK Financial Corp, Caliber Home Loans, Inc, Capital One, Deutsche Bank and EverBank.

Nationally, complaints reached a high of 5,840 for January 2013, 1,107 more than the next highest month of April 2013. The total emerging for September is the second lowest since records were first kept in December 2011. On a state by state level, this pattern largely repeats with a major exception for Florida which saw a peak of 849 complaints in June 2012. Then, as now, Florida was one of the top five states in the nation in its foreclosure rate. The national January spike came as the Qualified Mortgage standard required by the The Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010 came into play. It required mortgage lenders to take steps to insure borrowers could repay their mortgages.

Bank of America’s complaint volume follows the national trend, with a spike in January 2013 with 1,925 total complaints. Unlike nationally, the next month by volume of complaints was February of this year with 1,598 complaints. Prior to that, the highest month was May 2012 with 1,418 complaints. The lowest volume of complaints is September this year with 334.

Wells Fargo matched national trends for volume of complaints by month, with the exception of the current month being the lowest on record for number of complaints with 197 compared to the next lowest month, December 2011, when they had 221. JPMorgan’s complaint volume by month spiked in January and March of this year with 504 complaints. April of this year was the next highest month with 493 complaints, edging out May of last year with 488 complaints. September this year is on track to be the lowest month by complaint volume.

The federal government shutdown is unlikely to impact the current mortgage situation in the United States directly for most consumers, though mortgage processing by the Federal Housing Administration could be slower, resulting in fewer mortgages processed.

U.S. FDA advisory committee votes to grant Emergency Use Authorization to Moderna coronavirus vaccine

Category : Uncategorized

Friday, December 18, 2020

Capping a nearly year-long effort, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) of Moderna’s mRNA vaccine against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), after the agency’s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee (VRBPAC) voted yesterday 20-0, with 1 abstention, that the benefits of the vaccine outweigh its risks.

This comes less than 1 week after the FDA granted emergency use authorization to a similar vaccine made by Pfizer and BioNTech.

During yesterday’s deliberations, the advisory committee discussed plans to unblind participants in existing clinical studies, and considered whether scientific integrity requires placebo control of continuing studies. One possible solution that was discussed is a blinded crossover design. An additional research question is how to study whether vaccines protect against asymptomatic transmission. The committee member who abstained from the final vote said that expanded access would be better than emergency use authorization. Generally, the FDA adheres to the recommendations of its advisory committees, with only rare exceptions.

The Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna mRNA vaccines are the first two of their kind: they contain ribonucleic acid (RNA) encased in lipid nanoparticles. The nanoparticles deliver the RNA to cells in the body of the person receiving the vaccine. Ribosomes, which are parts of all cells, then translate the RNA into spike protein which then produces an immune response.

The emergency use authorization of a second vaccine comes as a welcome addition to the first, since no one single company can make enough vaccine for every person in the world (5–8 billion doses will be necessary for herd immunity depending on whether the vaccines prevent asymptomatic transmission or not). Also, the Moderna vaccine must be stored at -20°C (-4°F) which, while very cold, is easier to attain than the -70°C (-94°F) ±10°C required for storage of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine which requires vast quantities of dry ice and special, ultra-low-temperature freezers.

In the United States, the first shipment of each vaccine (for example, 3 million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine) will be reserved for health-care workers and nursing homes. Pfizer expects to manufacture 20 million doses of their vaccine in time to be administered this year, and 100 million by March. After nursing-home residents and health-care workers, the next people in line to receive the vaccines will be those over 65 years of age and those with significant co-morbidities and risk factors, and some essential workers. The general public in the United States can expect to have vaccines available in their doctors’ offices or pharmacies later in the spring of 2021.

The vaccine is designed to be taken twice; the second dose of the Moderna vaccine should be administered 4 weeks after the first. The second dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine should be administered 3 weeks after the first, and people should take the same brand twice.

The legal authority for emergency-use authorization is in section 564 of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. An EUA is less than a full approval, and represents a determination by the FDA that

 • The disease must be serious or life-threatening.
 • The vaccine may be effective to prevent, diagnose, or treat the disease.
 • The known and potential benefits of the vaccine outweigh the known and potential risks of the vaccine.
 • No adequate, fully-approved, alternative product is available to prevent the disease.

The vaccine development process normally takes 5–20 years, but scientists developed the new vaccines in record time by building on their experience with SARS and by performing many of the development, manufacturing, and testing steps in parallel.

COVID-19 is a respiratory and hematologic disease caused by SARS-CoV-2, a positive-sense single-stranded RNA virus believed to have originated in bats. The virus typically causes a cold-like or flu-like illness, but illness severity ranges widely from no symptoms at all to death, and it is very contagious. Although many cases are asymptomatic (50% of all transmission is from asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic persons), the disease has killed over 1.5 million people (294,874 of whom are in the United States) in only a year.

Donald Trump had directed the FDA commissioner to issue the EUA for the first (Pfizer/BioNTech) vaccine by the end of the day on Friday, December 11. Researchers continue to test 63 different vaccines against the coronavirus on humans.

Entertainment, Restaurants And Bars In Coventry

Category : Lunch

Submitted by: Susan Ashby

It is fair to say that Coventry is one of the provincial cities that provides plenty of entertainment for the local residents but, so far at least, is not a destination that attracts people to it for its night-life. With two universities in the city, during the academic term time the city is generally livelier than when the student population isn’t around. That said there are plenty of good bars, restaurants, theatres and clubs available in the city. Also, within 15 minutes of the city is the NEC arena (National Exhibition Centre Arena) and the touring shows it brings to the West Midlands.

Bars and Pubs: One of the oldest pubs in Coventry, with a history dating back to the 1620s is the Malt Shovel on Spon End, not far from the Ice rink at the western edge of the city centre. It has three serving areas and you can choose whether to sit in a ‘traditional’ area or something a bit more modern and cosmopolitan. The pub usually has live music on Friday and Saturday evenings, but currently only serves food at lunchtimes and on Sundays. It’s not surprising, given the proximity of Coventry to the town of Rugby, that there is a pub in Coventry with a strong rugby theme. The Gatehouse Tavern, on Hill Street near the Belgrade Theatre, is that pub. Rebuilt from a derelict mill building it features stained glass windows depicting the six nation’s rugby, such is the landlord’s devotion to the sport. Guest beers form the local Church End brewery are available and a large garden area makes it an even more inviting pub to visit in the summer. A member of the Scream chain of pubs, the Aardvark on the Butts in the city centre is very popular with the student population. Describing itself as the perfect place to relax and chill out in funky unpretentious surroundings, ideal for meeting up with friends for a drink or something to eat. However, locals variously describe it as; dirty, a dive, a good pub ruined and other comments that really can’t be printed here! Despite being close to Coventry University on Far Gosford Street the Beer Engine is popular with both students and locals, indeed it is seen just as much as a local pub as one frequented by students. Under new management the pub serves guest beers and has re-installed a piano in the bar for an occasional impromptu sing-along.

Restaurants: A good place to eat in Coventry is Fillini’s Restaurant, in the Ramada Hotel at the Butts at the western edge of the city centre. Whilst you can have an admirable lunch for under 10 a three course evening meal here will cost anything between 30 and 40, excluding drinks. The menu has a mixture of British and Italian cooking, which mainly has a Venetian theme to it. The Coombe Abbey Hotel in Binley to the east of the city centre also has a fine restaurant. The A La Carte menu here follows a more traditional British cuisine, featuring several steaks and fish dishes. The prices here are quite expensive, budget up to 50 per person for a three course dinner, before adding on any wine or drinks. The wine list is probably the best in the city; it has classic ’94 Burgundy wines like Chanson Gevrey Chambertin at 46.50 and a 1990 Chablis ler Cru Fourchume at only 37.50 a bottle, as well as a range of new world and non-vintage wines. If you’re there to celebrate something it also has the 1995 luxury Grande Cru champagne – Dom Perignon, Moet & Chandon – at 110 a bottle. Back in the city centre, on St Martins Lane is Brown Restaurant – which incorporates the Bar Covent Garden as well – this provides a better than average eating out experience in Coventry. Opened in 1973 it has a magnificent frontage onto the lane and has been mentioned in the Good Food Guide. Its menus have a distinctly Italian and French influence and a three course meal, excluding drinks; will be around 20 – 25 per person.

Entertainment: Careys Nightclub and Bar, at the Butts in the city centre, is a popular venue for a night out in Coventry. It has two floors and is used as a venue for touring bands, comedians and all sorts of dance evenings. Usually on Saturday nights upstairs is the main dance venue, but it is also open on Thursday and Friday evenings. Downstairs is used mainly for live bands, but at least once a fortnight it’s given over to a guest appearance or ‘open mic’ comedy club. The Warwick Arts Centre is in the campus of Warwick University, to the south of the city centre. It has four performance areas that cater for theatrical productions, a concert hall capable of seating 1200 people, a theatre with seating for just over 500 people, a studio with about 85 square metres of performance space and a small cinema. Theatre productions are staged by small touring professional or local amateur groups; whilst musical productions feature classical orchestras, rock and folk bands as well as contemporary international musicians. The centre is also a venue used by many of the county’s top touring comedians and poets. The Belgrade Theatre, in the city centre, was opened in 1958 and is one of the buildings that was part of the post-war re-building programme. The building is partly constructed from timber donated as a ‘thank you gift’ by the citizens of Belgrade, in what was then Yugoslavia. The auditorium holds over 850 people and is the place where such luminaries as Trevor Nunn, Michael Crawford and Joan Plowright initially made their names. Now a Grade II listed building it has recently been refurbished, reopening in September 2007.

‘Big Brother Australia’ evictee recounts youth in controversial religious group

Category : Uncategorized

Thursday, May 29, 2008

David Tchappat, a popular housemate recently evicted from the television reality program Big Brother Australia, has spoken out critically of his childhood experiences in the controversial religious group “Raven-Taylor-Hales Brethren“, referred to in Australian media as “Exclusive Brethren”. Tchappat was a participant in the edition Big Brother Australia 2008, and was voted off the show on May 25.

Tchappat, 33, a former police officer and presently a firefighter, left the controversial group at age 19. He says he attempted to leave at age 17 but was brought back by members of the group and “interrogated” by group leadership for months. Up until he left he had never eaten in a restaurant, listened to the radio or been to the movie theater. According to Macquarie National News, Tchappat’s former community numbers number approximately 15,000 in Australia. Raven-Taylor-Hales Brethren is a sect of Protestant Christianity and a breakaway group from Exclusive Brethren.

Due to his departure from the group, Tchappat had to break off contact with family members still inside the organization, though at times he speaks with his parents. Members do not vote in elections because they feel it contradicts their belief that God should determine who is in power, but they provide finances to the Liberal Party of Australia. Tchappat’s cousin Andrew left the group a few months after he did.

Look, I don’t like to say it’s a cult, but it basically is. My whole life was controlled.

After getting to know his fellow Big Brother Australia housemates for three weeks, Tchappat recounted some of his experiences in his former religious group. “Look, I don’t like to say it’s a cult, but it basically is. My whole life was controlled. I didn’t have a say in it myself,” he said on one episode. He grew up in the Raven-Taylor-Hales Brethren community in Gosford, New South Wales, and explained: “It’s based on Christian values but it’s very strict. So I had no TV, no radio, no computer, never been to a movie or a restaurant or kissed a girl – you name it, I didn’t do it.”

In an interview Tuesday with former Big Brother Australia runner-up Tim Brunero on Macquarie National News, Tchappat said he is planning on releasing a book about his experiences growing up in the controversial religious group. “I’ve spent the last two years writing it. It just happened that I got into Big Brother in the tail-end of it. Obviously there’s a few more chapters to add, but I’m really pumped, it’s an interesting story,” he said. He plans to title the book Losing my Religion.

He was also interviewed by ninemsn on Tuesday, and said he does not regret discussing his experiences in Raven-Taylor-Hales Brethren on Australian national television. “I’m an example of how you can go out and be successful. I say to people that if you are thinking about leaving, and you’re serious, take a punt and give it a go. You can always go back if you don’t like it.” Former members of the group were inspired by Tchappat’s comments and empathized with his experiences in posts to Big Brother Internet message boards.

I believe this is an extremist cult and sect. I also believe that it breaks up families.

Prime Minister of Australia Kevin Rudd criticized the Raven-Taylor-Hales Brethren group in August 2007. At the time he was leader of the Australian Labor Party, and requested that then-Prime Minister John Howard reveal what took place in a private meeting with senior members of the religious group. “I believe this is an extremist cult and sect. I also believe that it breaks up families,” said Rudd to reporters in Adelaide according to The Sydney Morning Herald. He noted that the organization was being investigated by the Australian Federal Police for prior election activities, and wanted to know how much funding had been given by the group to the Liberal Party.

During his election campaign Rudd called on Australian federal agencies including the anti-money laundering agency Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC), the Australian Federal Police, the Australian Taxation Office, and the Australian Electoral Commission to investigate the activities of Raven-Taylor-Hales Brethren. In spite of Rudd’s criticism of Raven-Taylor-Hales Brethren, the religious group was guaranteed AUD10 million in taxpayer funding for its school facilities in January 2008. Rudd had promised during his election campaign to maintain education funding levels for non-government schools if he became Prime Minister.

Australia media reported on May 18 that Rudd rejected a request from former members of Raven-Taylor-Hales Brethren to investigate the group. 34 ex-members of the religious group had sent a letter to the Prime Minister’s office asking him to investigate how they were treated in the organization. A spokesman for Rudd said that the ex-members should instead take their request to the police, and that a government investigation would raise religious freedom issues. Rudd’s chief of staff David Epstein said that the Prime Minister “does not resile from the views he expressed last year” and “remains concerned about the reported imposition of doctrines that weaken family bonds”.

Australian Greens spokeswoman Christine Milne told Australia’s ABC News said that the well-being of children still in the group should be of primary concern. “The issue here is not about religious freedom, it is about what this cult is doing to destroy families and effectively to undermine the law,” said Milne.

Ex-member Peter Flinn, who wrote the letter sent to Rudd which was signed by 33 other former members, was disappointed by the Prime Minister’s response. “We just want to highlight other equally fundamental human rights, such as access to family who remain Brethren members, a right callously denied for decades,” he said in a statement in The Sydney Morning Herald. Senator Bob Brown of the Australian Greens party has proposed a government inquiry into the group’s public funding, tax concessions and possible practices that harm children.
